Both the quality and quantity of this unique treasure are remarkable. The story of how it came to be left in the Staffordshire soil is likely to be more remarkable still.
The first pieces of the Staffordshire Hoard were found in early July 2009, they were discovered by Mr Terry Herbert while he was metal detecting in a field in Staffordshire.
An archaeological excavation followed, this was funded by English Heritage and Staffordshire County Council. The excavation was carried out by Birmingham Archaeology. Over 1,500 complete artefact's and fragments were discovered at the site.
The pieces are now proudly displayed in the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery for visitors to see.
Amongst the items found were sword fittings, part of a helmet and three gold Christian crosses.
The majority of the complete objects found are made of gold. Some of the pieces are decorated with pieces of garnet others are decorated with fine patterns.
